Technical SEO for SMEs: what actually moves rankings

No smoke about 'magic content': structure, sitemap, structured data and performance, explained for people who do not live and breathe SEO.

What you’ll take away

  • Technical SEO is the foundation; without it, even great content will not rank.
  • Sitemap, robots.txt and structured data are free and always forgotten.
  • Google cannot rank what it cannot crawl or understand.

Many people think SEO means writing articles with a keyword repeated fifteen times. That stopped working over a decade ago. What still moves rankings, especially for SMEs with small sites, is technical SEO: the invisible part that decides whether Google can crawl, understand and index your site correctly.

What Google needs to do its job

Before thinking about content, you need to make sure Google can access the site without obstacles.

An up-to-date sitemap.xml. It is the map that tells Google which pages exist and when they last changed. Without it, Google has to discover your site through links alone, which can take weeks.

A robots.txt that does not block by mistake. It is surprisingly common to find sites that, after a migration or platform change, accidentally block entire sections from search engines.

Clean, stable URLs. /services/custom-web-development/ ranks better and reads better than /index.php?page=3&cat=12. Changing URLs without redirecting throws accumulated ranking straight in the trash.

Structured data: the part almost nobody does

Structured data (schema.org) is code that tells Google exactly what each thing on your page is: this is a company, this is an article by this author on this date, this is a frequently asked question with this answer.

Watch out: without structured data, Google has to guess your page’s content. With it, you confirm it.

The practical benefit: rich results in the search engine (stars, expandable questions, breadcrumbs) that increase click-through even without moving up in ranking. It is the cheapest technical SEO win that exists, and the one fewest companies implement.

Performance: technical SEO, not just user experience

Google uses load speed (Core Web Vitals) as a direct ranking factor. A fast site does not just convert better: it also crawls better, because Google can index more pages within the same crawl budget.

What content cannot fix on its own

You can write the best article in your industry, but if it lives on a URL that changes every month, with no updated sitemap, on a site that takes five seconds to load, Google will be slow to find it, slow to trust it, and will probably never reach page one. Technical SEO does not replace content: it is the foundation content has nowhere to stand without.

How we do it at Bitora

Every site we build ships with a sitemap, correct robots.txt, clean URLs, relevant structured data (organization, articles, FAQs) and optimized performance from day one — not as a later “SEO phase” billed separately.

If you want to know the technical state of your current site, check the details on custom web development or ask us for a review.
